This month, we are highlighting our Live More® philosophy in honor of Live More® week and National Senior Health & Fitness Day at the end of the month. We are diving into each of the 8 key areas of wellness that make up the Live More® wheel. Today, our New York communities had the opportunity to highlight the Nutritional, Physical, and Spiritual areas of Wellness.

“We incorporated the Live More® Nutritional area of wellness into our Think More classes. Inviting others to join in for the special group. For the week, KSV and Senior Living Think More groups topics were on “9 foods to boost your brain power”. Which included an article, a form for each resident to plan a brain food meal, a food frenzy word game, a word find, and a page on reading the nutrition facts labels on food. Christine, the food service Director, made wonderful chocolate blueberry and nut bark. Ingredients that were on our brain boosting foods. The residents loved them and learned from the lesson. For the 2nd Think More group, our topic was “10 Heart Healthy Foods”. This consisted of an article listing and explaining the 10 Heart Healthy foods, a crossword puzzle on healthy foods, a food and nutrition word search and a discussion on things we can do to keep healthy besides eating right. Christine made lovely yogurt, berry and granola parfaits. The residents loved them and asked if they would serve these occasionally. They were informed that it is on the breakfast menu. Over all the addition of the healthy foods to Think More was special and very eye opening for the residents. They learned that just because food is nutritious doesn’t mean it can’t taste delicious.”

“Every Thursday at Keepsake Village at Greenpoint we have a cooking group. The Food Service Director, Matt, and Activities Director, Beth, facilitates the group. The residents enjoy helping and getting their hands dirty in the kitchen. They helped make our 3 o’clock snack where we chose to make English muffin pizzas, a healthy alternative to normal pizza.”

“The Physical aspect of the LiveMore wheel is very important. My two mottos are “Keep moving…You’ll keep improving and Use it or lose it” We provide many different exercise classes here in our community. We have stretching 101 (photo below) , exercising with sticks (pound fitness), balloon volleyball (photo below), standing arm & leg exercise, a little “R & R’ and of course the NuStep machines. We also have two Wellness Aides along with the Activities staff who provide Residents with one-on-one, small group exercise classes and large group exercise classes. Walking Club is also a big hit. We have it twice a week and when the weather is nice we walk outside. The ultimate goal of the physical aspect is to keep our Residents happy, strong and able to Live More® while maintaining their independence.”

“Chaplain Jana Bienanz from Hospice came and spoke to our residents about spirituality and religion. There were at least 10 residents there for the majority of the discussion which began with a discussion about the “spiritual but not religious” segment of our society. We discussed the inherent nature of spirit and how people define their own spirituality in the privacy of their hearts and how this shapes how they understand hardship, loss, illness and suffering.”

“The Sisters of the Franciscan Villa are some of the most accomplished women I have come to know. During their professional careers, they were teachers, principals, nurses, and hospital executives. Most of the Sisters are retired, but still seek to find meaning and purpose in their everyday lives. Therefore, they never truly retire. They spend their days volunteering, both outside the community and within it. Unfortunately, sometimes illness and physical limitations make volunteering difficult and leave some without purpose or fulfillment. In order to satisfy this need, we partnered with the Central New York Marian Center two years ago. The Marian Center is an organization which aims to bring awareness to the Rosary and praise Mary, the Blessed Mother. Volunteers from the Marian Center, as well as Sister volunteers, meet weekly to make rosaries for parishes in need all over the country and the world. Through this activity, the Sisters not only have the opportunity to participate in something that gives them purpose and meaning, but also brings them closer to their faith and love of the Blessed Mother.”
